At the races: Jockey 'Stickman' dies at 35

* Aiken-born jockey Marion "Jamie" Cornwell died late Saturday afternoon at the age of 35. The horseman who celebrated his 35th birthday last week was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

A profile in courage, Cornwell, who was known too many by his nickname the "Stickman," realized his dream of becoming a jockey, despite being born with free-floating thumbs. He honed his skills while working at Franklin Smith Sr.'s Elloree Training Center. He won his first race on Oct. 31, 2007, while in the irons on Banana Pancakes at Laurel Park.

"What he did to realize his dream of becoming a jockey is inspiring," said Smith, in a phone interview Sunday. "It was a fantasy for him to accomplish what he did and get to the races. He was very well thought of by everyone in Maryland (where he was based as a jockey)."

* The Estate of Edward Evans' Quiet Giant decisively won her third consecutive stakes race Sunday, with a nine-length romp in the 11âÑ8-mile Rare Treat Stakes at Aqueduct. The bay filly was sent off as the 1-20 favorite and was briefly challenged by Opus A before shaking loose from that rival. The Todd Pletcher charge won the Cheap Seat Stakes Dec. 12 at Aqueduct and followed that victory with a win in the Lady on the Run Stakes at Aqueduct on Jan. 16. The 4-year-old daughter of Giant's Causeway increased her lifetime earnings to $172,050. Quiet Giant was broken and trained in Aiken by Legacy Stable's Ron Stevens and Brad Stauffer.

* Darley's It's Tricky stalked the early leader Portside and seized command before drawing clear to win by daylight, scoring an 8-length victory in the 1-mile and-70-yard Busher Stakes at Aqueduct on Sunday. The bay filly was sent off as the 1-5 favorite and is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. The 3-year-old daughter of the 2003 Horse-of-the-Year Mineshaft was broken and trained in Aiken by Tim Jones.

* The Estate of Edward Evans' Buster's Ready lived up to her sire's name More Than Ready by leaving the field in her wake and scoring a 103âÑ4-length victory in a 1-mile allowance race on Feb. 16 at Aqueduct. The 3-year-old filly is trained by Pletcher and was broken and trained by Stevens and Stauffer.

* Dogwood Stable's Slambino paid $33.60 to win as the 6-year-old son of Grand Slam uncoiled a powerful turn of foot in the stretch to win a 11âÑ16-mile race on the turf by a half-length. The dark bay horse was piloted to victory by Alex Solis. Frank Alexander conditions Slambino.

* Dogwood Stable's stakes winner Sky Music finished second Friday in the 1-mile-and-70-yard Undaunted Mettle Stakes at Aqueduct.
