The cause of a fire that severely damaged a Maple Street single-story home is being investigated by Aiken Public Safety.

Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aiken Public Safety received a 911 call from someone who reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence at 723 Maple St.

About 25 firefighters responded to the residence and began to attack the blaze; however, Public Safety firefighters couldn't enter the home immediately because of the amount of fuel burning inside, said Sgt. Jake Mahoney, a spokesman for Aiken Public Safety.

The residence was packed with clothing and other items that were stacked as high as the ceiling, which made it impossible for firefighters to enter until the blaze was "knocked down."

Firefighters had a hard time getting through the piles of items, even after extinguishing the blaze.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 60 minutes.

Investigators found that the origin was in a hallway adjacent to the home's bathroom, but hadn't determined the cause at press time Tuesday.

The fire severely damaged the attic, hallway, bedrooms and living areas of the residence.

Smoke damage was severe and widespread throughout the residence, Mahoney added.

The homeowner was not at home during the fire, and no injuries were reported, he said.

The Aiken Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner with immediate needs.

Lindsay Findley, executive director of the Red Cross, said the local chapter will ensure the resident has somewhere to stay and will make sure to take care of her immediate needs.
